AVID’s mission is to prepare all students for college readiness and success in a global society. AVID students are often first generation in their family to attend college, from single parent households, from homes where English is the second language, and from families on the low socio-economic range. After completion of the program, it is expected the students will enroll and be successful in rigorous four-year postsecondary institutions and become responsible leaders. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a national college readiness system. AVID identifies students in the academic middle from groups underrepresented on college campuses who have great academic potential. AVID delivers a demanding college-prep curriculum and facilitates student involvement in extracurricular activities. The formula is simple – raise expectations of students and with the AVID support system, they will rise to the challenge.
The Alliance funded the implementation of AVID at GHS in 2008 and later the expansion to Central and Western Middle Schools. The Alliance has invested $680K+ and over 500 students have benefited from the GPS AVID programs. AVID educators are a key component of their students’ success. They attend best in class AVID professional training and many receive GPS recognition as Distinguished Teachers. While GPS now budgets for the majority of program costs, the Alliance continues to fund professional development for AVID educators and other AVID classroom program needs.
In 2013 the Alliance established its Mentoring and Scholarship Program to help GHS AVID graduates navigate their college years and bridge the funding gap faced by many of these students.
