AVID, Lehigh and now EY

by Kandi Deleg

Looking back, my journey really began with AVID. It was something much bigger than I realized at the time and I had no idea how much of an impact it would have on my life. When I first joined AVID in high school, I didn’t realize how much it would shape me into the person I am today. AVID gave me a foundation during a challenging time. It gave me a support system, specifically a teacher, Mrs. Bittman, who saw potential in me when I didn’t always see it in myself. She pushed me to recognize my own abilities and challenge the limits I placed on myself. In addition the Alliance connected me with a mentor, Nancy Kail, who guided me through the college process, answered my questions about financial aid and helped with any lingering questions that came with preparing for college.

During my time at Lehigh, I had concerns about the cost of college but the Alliance Scholarship alleviated much of that financial pressure and allowed me to enjoy my college experience without worrying about my expenses. Beyond financial assistance, the Alliance gave me two incredible people, Julie and Trish, who became an important part of my support system as I transitioned to college. Whenever I needed advice, help finding professional clothing or even short term employment, they were always there to help. Having people I could lean on and knowing I had their support made me feel like I was never alone.

At Lehigh, I was able to grow both personally and professionally. I was able to get out of my comfort zone by being the first in my family to attend college. It was a big transition but gave me opportunities to become more independent and learn more about what I wanted for my future. Through my internships, I was able to become more certain about the career path I wanted to pursue. Now as I begin this next chapter after graduating, I am excited to start my career at EY and carry everything I have learned with me.
