Earning a college degree is about more than building a career. It is a way to create opportunities for the next generation. When I was growing up, I often had to figure things out on my own because I did not always have guidance. I want to change that for others. Whether by offering internships, mentoring young people, or helping through my network, I hope to be the person who gives someone else a chance they did not expect. Sometimes, one person’s belief or support can make all the difference. I know this because others have done it for me.

Serving on the AVID Alumni Advisory Council and as Vice President of Ascend UConn has strengthened my communication, leadership, and strategic thinking while allowing me to collaborate with students, alumni, recruiters, and professionals. Leading initiatives and representing these organizations has taught me the importance of professionalism, accountability, and building meaningful relationships. As a first-generation college student, I have learned that opportunities rarely come to you. You have to create them. That mindset has motivated me to pursue internships, leadership positions, volunteer opportunities, and professional development experiences that continue to challenge me. 

The Greenwich Alliance has greatly supported me in my college journey as it has provided me with a community of other students who were in a similar demographic to myself but also with leaders of our community that opened their welcoming arms to me, a first generation and low income college student. That label can be a very isolating title living in a town where it feels as though the large majority of others are in the complete opposite boat. In turn the isolation can be extremely demotivating and strip you of any determination and focus you once believed you had in creating a successful future for yourself and your community. However, being a part of the AVID program joined me with classmates that were facing the same reality as I was and created a safe space for me to share my experiences without fear of judgement from others who did not understand.
