INVESTING IN OUR SCHOOLS IS WHAT WE DO!

AVID, a national program, with roots in CA and TX was delivering access to college for first generation students and addressing the achievement gap. The AVID curriculum and tutorial components, high expectations for student success and the robust professional development for teachers all comprise this college readiness system.

Missy (Macchio) Brown attended AVID training to become the first AVID Elective teacher and worked with Alison Lochridge, AVID Site Coordinator, and Linda Woods, Guidance Coordinator, to design what AVID would look like at GHS and how it could fit into the high school's complex schedule.

In the fall of 2009, the first class of GHS AVID students (later known as the "Sweet Sixteen") began their journey with their teacher Ms. Macchio.

AVID has grown from this first class of 16 students to 172 students in 8 different sections at GHS. Western and Central Middle schools each have AVID elective courses and Western is now AVID School-wide.
