SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER 2023

Hi Friends,

Book drives, college essays, computers, Turkey Trot and more... the 2023-2024 school year is well underway - check it out!

Meet Trish Rohr - our first AVID SUCCESS Program Director!  A dynamic educator with 25 years of experience as a middle school science teacher and administrator.

I am very excited to have Trish and Judy Nedell, AVID SUCCESS Program Assistant, working with me to build out AVID SUCCESS programming for AVID students, alumni, teachers and families.

Our 13th Annual Turkey Trot 5K & 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk on Saturday, November 25th is only one month away.  Register now to save!  Adult prices go up next Wednesday, November 1st. School Competition is ON!

Happy Halloween,

BOOKS...BOOKS...BOOKS

THANKS! The GHS Roots and Shoots Club collected 538 books for the Alliance's annual book drive held in mid-October for the Boys & Girls Club. The children were once again excited to dig through all the books and pick out the perfect ones to bring home and read.

Look at Jeremiah's smile -  he is so happy with his bag of books!

Transition to College (T2C)
In July, eighteen GHS AVID23 graduates got a jump start on the upcoming college school year with our first AVID SUCCESS Transition to College (T2C) 6-part workshop, designed and taught by Trish Rohr (AVID SUCCESS Program Director) at the YMCA of Greenwich. Funding for T2C came from Greenwich United Way and Fairfield County's Community Foundation.  See Trish's newsletter here.

AT&T Donates $10K for Technology Grant. Computers are essential for college! Five AVID graduates, without technology after turning in their GPS issued Chromebooks, now have a computer. As a part of the grant, students were required to participate in a 2-hr digital citizenship course taught by Lisa Dempsey, GHS Business teacher and technology coach.

Thanks to State Senator Fazio for connecting us to AT&T.

College Essays and Common Applications
AVID SUCCESS volunteers are working with 30 GHS AVID seniors, taught by Pilar Rabassa and Evan Olmstead, to finish essays and all of the pieces of the college application to meet the submission deadlines.

"I have loved working with these smart and motivated AVID students. The stories they have to tell are really incredible." Anne Connerty, volunteer.

AVID Kicks off with a Bonfire!
GHS AVID students and teachers had a chance to hang out and roast hot dogs & marshmallows at Camp Simmons in early September. The relaxing afternoon was the perfect ending of a busy school week. Bob DeAngelo, Blue Sky Adventures, built a roaring fire and provided games for all.
