GHS College Essay Workshop - August 2022

GHS Guidance has offered a College Essay Workshop to rising seniors in August for the past seven years.  This workshop serves as a fundraiser for the Greenwich Alliance for Education.  The Alliance mobilizes community resources to provide opportunities and services that foster educational success for all Greenwich Public School students.

This year’s workshop will focus on the personal essay (Common App questions) and if time allows, supplemental essays, including the COVID-19 related optional question.

The workshop is comprised of 8 sessions with Virtural or In-person Options:

Monday through Thursday August 15 - 18 from 4pm-6pm

AND

Monday through Thursday August 22 - 25 from 4pm-6pm

The fee for the 8 sessions is $400.  This fee is reduced for students who have a free/reduced lunch approval, or for students in the GHS AVID program.  Please ask your school counselor or AVID teacher for the discount code.

Our AVID trained English teacher Ms. Brown will distribute the pre-recorded lessons for each day of the workshop, and instructional materials will be shared in electronic format with students.  We will cap the workshop at fifty (50) students to work with five faculty members, for a 10 to 1 ratio.  Our faculty consists of English Teachers and School Counselors.  The workshop includes a combination of individual work time, and live one-to-one discussion/support/editing in each of the 8 sessions.  Students may keep all shared lessons and resources.

This year, we are offering students the choice of working at GHS in person with a faculty member, or working virtually through Google Meet.  Students are asked to select their preference when they register.  The past two years we’ve conducted this workshop entirely virtually.  Each student has approximately twelve minutes of focused one-to-one time with their assigned faculty member.   We’ve learned a combination of this focused adult time and time working independently allows students to complete their essay in the two week span of time.

Registration is on a first come first served basis.  Registration will close when we reach our maximum of 50.
