The Alliance had its origins several years ago when the Superintendent of the Greenwich Public Schools approached a group of town parents and leaders and asked them to explore the possibility of establishing a local education foundation.  Part of the reason behind the request was that the impressive achievements of many of Greenwich’s public school students overshadowed a disturbing achievement gap.  Minority students persistently fell behind their peers.  Furthermore, it was known that some parents could not support their children, economically or otherwise, in areas that were crucial towards a successful future.  Another reason was the belief that all students would benefit from a variety of innovative educational programs, and that Greenwich was a town that valued all of its children and had the resources to invest in them.

After a year and a half of intense research and discussion, in 2006 the Greenwich Alliance for Education came into being. Since then, we have created and continue to offer three flagship programs: Going Places With Books, Tuning In to Music, and Reaching Out Grants. We continue to fundraise, publicize, and constantly seek partnerships with community members and organizations to benefit our town’s students.

Education foundations engage their communities to improve educational offerings, enhance learning experiences, and provide the best preparation possible for success after graduation. The Alliance joins over 80 education foundations throughout Connecticut, and thousands across the country, in supporting children and our public schools.
